MARY LUCILE HODGES BLACKBURN

Sylvania – Mary Lucile Hodges Blackburn of Sylvania, GA passed away peacefully at home after a long illness on Monday, August 1, 2022.

She was born in Springfield, GA on February 13, 1934, and was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Washington Hodges and Lena Jerald Hodges, her husband B. E. “Bully” Blackburn, and by two brothers, Tarver Hodges of Springfield, GA and Gerald Hodges (Virginia) of Augusta, GA.

Mary was a devoted and beloved wife, and mother of three daughters. She was a long-time and active member of First United Methodist Church in Sylvania. She served as the treasurer of the Nell Pace Sunday school class for many years and a member of the Nell Pace Circle. She was an auxiliary volunteer at the Screven County Hospital. She also served as a substitute teacher in the Screven County Schools for nearly 30 years. With a deep appreciation for nature and its beauty, Mary thrived on tending her flower and vegetable gardens and watching birds in her back yard. Of all things she loved Mary most loved her children and grandchildren, who knew her as “Mimi.” She always had time to welcome, talk to, play with, and feed her family.

Survivors include: Sister, Lena Hodges Krauss (Richard – deceased). Sister-in-law Gracie Hodges. Daughters: Marianne Huff (Allen), Frances Blackburn; Jeanne Boykin (Michael). Grandchildren: Candy Holland (Jae Dahl), Benjamin Huff (Mercedes Wright), Mary Kate Holland (Browning Bargeron); Elizabeth Huff (Silas Cimino-Hurt), John Boykin (Ashley Boykin), and Lane Boykin. Great-grandchildren: Palmer Boykin, Porter Huff, and Cooper Boykin. Nephews and Nieces: Richard Krauss, Terri Krauss Flexer (Bruce), Carol Hodges Lay (Kenny), Ricky Hodges, and Philip Hodges (Tara).

The family also thanks the many caregivers who stayed with Mary over the recent years. We received your patient and loving care for our mother as care for us, as well. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 4, at Thomas-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home in Sylvania, GA from 6:00-7:30pm. Her funeral service will be at 2:00pm on Friday, August 5 at the First United Methodist Church of Sylvania with Reverends Dorsia Atkinson and Allen Huff officiating. Interment will follow in the Screven County Memorial Cemetery.
