Joyce Ann Herndon Pevey, 88, of Sylvania, GA, passed away peacefully on January 9th, 2025. A cherished member of the church community, Joyce served as a dedicated church pianist for more than 70 years.
She was born on March 25, 1936, to George K. and Cleo Herndon in Aberdeen, MS. Joyce’s passion for music began early in life. Over the years, she became renowned for her musicianship, love for hymns, and ability to convey deep emotions through her piano playing, touching the hearts of many in the congregation.
In addition to her music, Joyce found solace and joy at her beloved mountain house, creating cherished memories with family and friends. Joyce also had a keen eye for interior decorating, transforming spaces with creativity and warmth, making every environment she touched a true reflection of her vibrant personality.
Joyce held several roles including the Hiring Coordinator at the Walmart Distribution Center in Statesboro, GA, for many years. Her dedication to her work and her team was well-known, and she made a lasting impact on those who had the pleasure of working with her. Joyce's commitment to excellence and her caring nature will be fondly remembered by her colleagues.
In the latter years of her life, Joyce found immense solace and unwavering companionship in her precious dog, Dolly. Dolly provided constant and loyal support, staying by Joyce's side through thick and thin, and their bond brought great comfort and joy during this time.
Joyce spent 64 wonderful years with her devoted husband, George, sharing a lifetime of love and companionship. Together they served in full-time ministry for more than 60 years, most recently at First Christian Church of Sylvania for 28 years. Joyce deeply loved and cherished her children and grandchildren, who were the light of her life.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, George K. and Cleo Herndon; sister, Doris Forsythe; and brothers, Robert, Doyle, Harold, and Billy Herndon.
Joyce is survived by her husband, George W. Pevey, Jr.; three sons, Mark (Cathi), Michael (Kerry), and Christopher (Mandi); seven grandchildren, Grace Hodges, Noah, Luke, Jake, Katelyn, Megan, and Della Grace Pevey; great-granddaughter, Carolina Hodges; and her best friend of forty-four years, Cheryl Ozment.
Her legacy of beautiful music, unyielding faith, and unwavering love for her family will forever resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The celebration of Joyce's life will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at First Christian Church of Sylvania. Visitation with the family will take place at 10:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Screven Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Christian Church of Sylvania in Joyce's memory.
