Burnsville, North Carolina

Burnsville, NC (formerly of Sylvania) – Ellen Woody Cleland, age 88, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 29th. A native of Yancey County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Edd and Grace Sparks Woody. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Cleland; sisters: Annie McFalls, Ruth Thomas, Jenny Thomas and Mary Sue Cook; brothers: Vergil Woody, Tude Woody and Doc Woody and daughter-n-law, Dorothy Cleland. Ellen was a member of First Baptist Church of Sylvania. She enjoyed riding through the mountains of Yancey County as well as golfing. She was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge and the Red Hat Ladies Society.

Surviving is her daughter, Debbie Robbins and husband, Eddy, of Burnsville; step-sons: Don Cleland and wife, Debbie, of Lafayette, GA and Bryan Cleland of Hiram, GA; sister, Shelby Baker and husband, Bob, of Orlando, FL; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and her precious dog, Sophie. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends also survive.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 1st in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Service of Burnsville, NC. Tony Laws and Pastor Charlie Cooper officiated. A private graveside service was held Wednesday in the Double Island Baptist Church Cemetery, Double Island, NC.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge, Spruce Pine, NC for the wonderful care and support during her last days.
