Charles David Hill

January 15, 1944 — June 8, 2020

Hiltonia, Georgia

Charles was born January 15, 1944 to C.L. "Bish" Hill and Eunice Bragg Hill. Born and raised in Hiltonia, GA, Charles loved life. He graduated from Screven County High School and served two years in the US Army in the Vietnam War. Charles returned to Screven County where he met and married the love of his life, Patricia Elaine Sheppard Hill. For their fifty years together, they loved each other through good times and bad (like the time he mangled his hand in a corn picker and lost a finger). He and Pat started Hill Well Drilling a business they ran together for forty-eight years.

Charles sponsored and played on the Hill Well Drilling softball — a winning team which would have been champions if not for those Sheppards!

Charles was a founding member of the Hiltonia Fire Department, Mayor of Hiltonia for twelve years, a member of Hiltonia Baptist Church, Old Dead Pine Hunting Club, and Bay Gall Sporting Clay Club. One of his many passions was coaching the Screven County 4H Shotgun team. His love for the kids and the sport made him an outstanding coach and mentor.

Charles was an avid hunter. He was a happy man in a duck blind in Arkansas, a deer stand on Beaver Dam Creek, or hunting turkeys in Argentina. He loved hunting and clay shooting so well that, as his heart weakened, he simply took his general practitioner or cardiologist with him!

Charles even made national TV on "Gobblin Fever" with hunting trips to Argentina and Arkansas. He looked forward to trips to Arkansas with good friends. Each time, four or five men piled into a truck drove straight through, telling stories all the way. Sometimes, if the ducks hadn't come in, they'd turn right back around and drive back home, only to repeat the trip a week or two later.

Charles looked forward to Tuesday night suppers at Bay Gall Sporting Clays. He considered the 'regulars' his family and loved swapping stores and enjoying good food.

Hiltonia Baptist Church is another of Charles families. He loved his church family and his Lord. Charles lived life in the true spirit of Christ. If he saw a need, he filled it. He often went the extra mile to help someone - friend or stranger.

Charles' life was marked by energy, enthusiasm, generosity, passion, love, kindness, humility. He lived life well.

Left to treasure their memories of him are his wife, Patty Hill, children Shannon Hill Moore, Tommy Moore, Stormy Hill Garland and Jason Garland; grandchildren Thomas Raeb Moore, Mia Elaine Moore, Marly Mayden Moore, Bradley Owen Garland, Brandon David Garland and Barrett Wesley Garland. Brother Bobby Jack Hill (deceased) and widow Judy Hill, Sister, Joanne Tanner, Brother Toby Hill and his wife Shirley. Brothers and sister-in-law, nieces and nephews, 4H Club members, hunting buddies and friends as numerous as the stars.
